SPRING 2021 HOUSE OF DELEGATES UPDATE

Hello Everyone,

The spring House of Delegates meeting was Saturday, May 1st, and the critical issue question was how does the Academy promote a Culture of Positive Behaviors to Increase Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA)?  Meeting objectives were:

  • define the term microaggressions and understand the scope and relevance in personal and professional environments

  • embrace proposed HOD Core Values and Guiding Principles to exemplify principles of IDEA

  • influence Academy organizational units to promote and adopt IDEA culture

  • generate potential strategies and tactics for the HOD’s Program of Work to support the IDEA Action Plan created by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Pre-meeting materials defining, giving examples of microaggressions, their impacts and more included readings and watching a video, and those materials are found on EatRightPro.

Our “spark” speaker was Dr. David Ballard, and we were broken into our groups to have our three dialogues.  Dialogue 1 was exploration of delegates’ discuss how we have experienced microaggression  Dialogue 2 was what are the challenges delegates face when “living” the proposed HOD core values and guiding principles.  Dialogue 3 finished us out for the day, and it was what strategies can the HOD implement to support delegates from various representation groups (affiliates, DPGs, ACEND, CDR, and NDEP), and moving forward what might the HOD do to support the IDEA action plan.

While it may seem that the topic of the HODs discussion was a top down-decided topic from the Academy’s Board of Directors, the topic of diversity in the profession has been percolating up from the membership for longer than I can surely say.  But it’s been awhile and it began most recently 10-15 years ago to have more males in the profession and more recently more people of color.  Both of these are example on how to better reflect the world the profession reaches.  But one more ‘but’.  But we know it’s not that direct of a route and some of the routes need to be reviewed for barriers to men or people of color or anyone who wants to be here.  Could the routes could be improved upon to allow us to be professionally, organizationally, and policy synchronized to accelerate nutrition and health equity?  I think, based on what evidence I have learned this year, the answer is yes.

This is my final month as the affiliate’s delegate.  This position has been the most enriching “extracurricular” activity I have yet to experience through the education, process, and networking that goes on.  I will miss it but have found another AND activity to plug into so that some of the above will continue.  All this to say, if this experience appeals to you as well, consider running for the position when it is time.

Thank you to the past three years of affiliate BODs especially ArAND Webmaster Dr. Alicia Landry and former ArAND Executive Director Margaret Pauly.

Sincerely,

Mary
